The Beauty of Non-Binary: Non-Binary Awareness Week

Today, this week, and everyday, we aim to celebrate and bring awareness to the diverse range of people who identify as Non-Binary, Gender Nonconforming, and Genderqueer. ✨

Who does non-binary refer to? 🖤💜🤍💛

Non-binary refers to those who identify outside the gender binary, who identify as genderqueer, or are outside of the gender spectrum completely. That said, there is no ONE way to be Non-Binary. There is no one way to dress or express, no single correct pronouns, and no one way to BE Non-Binary. All Non-Binary folks are valid, beautiful, and should be respected. To exist outside of the gender binary can be a vulnerable experience, but it is also beautiful and freeing.

You will see the non-binary community using the acronym NBGQ which refers to Non-Binary and Genderqueer folks, or TGNC/NB which refers to Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming/Non-Binary.

How can you be a better ally to Non-Binary Folks?

  • Introduce yourself using your name and pronouns. Whether you are in a professional or casual setting, introducing yourself this way will normalize asking and providing correct pronouns going forward.

  • Do not assume someone’s pronouns. In the case that you do - quickly apologize and correct yourself going forward. That said, to the best of your ability, try to remember folks’ correct pronouns. It is a very simple way to show respect and validation.

  • Use genderless terms when addressing groups of friends, colleagues, or other. For example, instead of saying “guys” or “ladies”, etc. when addressing a group, you should replace it with “folks”, “all”, “everyone”, “friends”, or another term that does not specify assumed gender.

  • If you’re not sure about a person’s pronouns, just ASK!

  • SUPPORT and show love.
